PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL REMINDER TO SPOTTING A RAT INFESTATION

If these obvious signs are not present, examine the surroundings for rat paths. These tracks are left in grass and low vegetation and act as foraging paths for rodents. Rats tend to follow the same paths after they have been established. Norway rats dwell in burrows found in grassy embankments, beneath the roots of trees and at the edges of paving and drain covers. Roof rat nests may also be found inside in lofts, attics, beneath floorboards and in other dark, infrequently visited locations.
The most obvious sign of a rat infestation is the presence of dead or living rats. Rats prefer to hide, given enough space, so if rats are observed in plain sight, it is likely that a full blown infestation. When space becomes limited due to increased population, rats are forced out into the open. Rat droppings are a good indication of feeding rat population. Rats also tend to leave dirt or grease marks along walls and floorboards.
Rats are active throughout the year, periodically check for signs of their presence. Once rats invaded homes or business commercial buildings, Rodent proofing by a professional rat exterminator is very important keep property building from rat infestation. With out the knowledge of a pest control professional it is only a matter of time before  finding evidence of rats and mice  indoors. Experience has shown it is less time consuming to control rodents before their numbers get too high, and fewer traps and less bait will be required if control is started early.
Rat Droppings  tend to be found concentrated in specific locations as rats produce up to 40 droppings per night. Brown rat droppings are dark brown in a tapered, spindle shape – resembling a large grain of rice. Fresh droppings are moist, soft, glisten and look wet. Once, the droppings begin to harden which usually takes a few days to week, they appear dull. Rat droppings become gray, dusty and crumbly whereas mice become hard and whitish. Contact a rat control professional to clean up rodent feces. Although a simple task, there are infectious viruses, like Hantavirus found in rodent’s urine, rodent droppings and even nesting material like insulation.
Rats scratching Noises:  Black rats in particular are agile climbers, earning them their common name  the roof rat. They can easily gain access into loft spaces and upper floors of buildings, so scratching noises at night may suggest their presence. Brown rats on the other hand, are less adept climbers and more likely to be identified by a grinding or chattering noise they make with their teeth known as bruxing as they scurry under decking, sheds and floorboards. Rats and mice have incisor teeth that are large and continually growing. The teeth have hard enamel on the front surface and softer dentine behind. As rats and mice gnaw they wear the teeth down and sharpen them into chisel like implements through uneven wearing. Rats and mice gnaw things other than food to keep their teeth worn down and sharp. Unfortunately for us they often choose to gnaw wiring, plumbing, joists and items stored where they are.
Rat running tracks: Tracks are an excellent way to determine the presence of a critter.Rats tend to travel the same route along walls, along fences, under bushes. Trails appear as narrow, worn paths. Roof rats can often be seen at night running along overhead utility lines or fence tops. Rats leave foot and tail marks in dusty, less-used areas of buildings. Shining a strong flashlight at a low angle should reveal tracks clearly. To establish if an infestation is active, sprinkle fine flour or talc along a small stretch of floor near the footprints and check for fresh tracks the next day.
Rats rub Marks: Rats use established routes along skirting boards and walls due to their poor eyesight. Grease and dirt on their bodies leave smudges and dark marks on both objects and surfaces they repeatedly brush against. These marks may indicate rodent activity, but as smears may remain for a long period of time, they are not a good gauge of an active infestation.
Rat Burrows: Brown rats are well known for digging and excavating extensive burrow systems for shelter, food storage and nesting. They build burrows next to solid objects or structures a good example is decking, garden sheds, garages etc. and are also found in secluded, well vegetated areas such as Bushes.
